Odisha Tribal Development Society (OTDS)
The Tribal Development Society of Odisha is an organization that works towards the overall development of tribal communities in Odisha, India. The organization aims to improve the quality of life and livelihoods of tribal communities by providing them with essential resources and support.
OTDS was established in 2000 by the Government of Odisha to address the developmental issues faced by tribal communities. The organization works towards empowering tribal communities by providing them with access to essential resources, such as education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities.
Orissa is home to 62 different tribal communities, with some residing in every corner of the state. The most populous tribes include the Kondhs, Koyas, Gadabas, Oraon, Juangs, and Santals. The tribes are divided into four groups based on their language: Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burmese, and Austric. Nowadays, only tribes from the Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, and Austric groups live in Orissa since the Tibeto-Burmese group has left.
Despite their diverse backgrounds, the tribal people of Orissa are known for their hard work and humble lifestyles. Many engage in occupations like agriculture, fishing, or hunting. Some tribes, such as the Bondo and Gadaba, even have their own looms and create clothes for personal use. Better-established tribes also work in mills and handicraft industries.
Orissa’s scheduled areas cover six districts completely (Mayurbhanja, Sundargarh, Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangpur, and Malkangiri) and seven districts partially (Balasore, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Phulbani). Over 50 percent of the state’s tribal population is concentrated in Koraput, Mayurbhanja, and Sundargarh districts, with Koraput alone accounting for 25 percent of the tribal population (including present-day Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangpur, and Malkangiri districts).
